Would you take a stint at the White House over IB analyst?

Purely for discussion purposes but was wondering at what point it becomes worth it to swap out the traditional two first years of IB with something else.

E.g., 2 years at a BB vs 2 years at the Department of Agriculture? The BB probably makes more sense.

2 years at a BB vs 2 years at the White House? White House might clinch it in that scenario

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the decision between a White House stint and an IB analyst role depends heavily on your long-term career goals and the value you place on the experience each path offers.

  1. White House Stint: A role at the White House can provide unparalleled prestige, a unique network, and exposure to high-level decision-making. This experience is particularly valuable if you're aiming for a career in public policy, government relations, or even transitioning into certain private sector roles where such a background is highly respected (e.g., consulting, corporate strategy, or lobbying). It’s a rare opportunity that can set you apart in ways traditional finance roles might not.

  2. IB Analyst Role: On the other hand, two years as an IB analyst at a BB (bulge bracket) firm is a proven launchpad for careers in high finance. It offers rigorous technical training, strong exit opportunities (e.g., private equity, hedge funds, corporate development), and a lucrative compensation package. If your goal is to stay within finance or transition to roles that value financial modeling and deal experience, IB is the safer and more direct route.

  3. Comparison: The White House stint might "clinch it" if your aspirations lean toward public service, politics, or roles where the prestige and network from such an experience outweigh the technical skills and financial upside of IB. However, for those focused on finance or business, the IB analyst role likely provides a more relevant skill set and career trajectory.

Ultimately, the choice hinges on where you see yourself in 5-10 years and which path aligns better with that vision. Both are prestigious in their own right but cater to very different career aspirations.

There is a new role at the american swf, but they're taking 2 years of ib as well so not sure how that would work. Would def do something at DoW if it paid decent enough tho.
