WSO trolls
Why are there so many WSO trolls in the IB forum? This forum, by and large, has been super helpful with recruiting and staying up to date with timelines, and I do appreciate it for that. However, I’ve recently begun looking at discussion posts out of boredom that deviate from the *insert bank* SA 2022 discussions, and there are just random people like middlebuckethardo or that dude that’s from oxbridge whatever. The things they say are also often incredibly racist or incredibly classist, and always disgusting in some way. Why bother doing this in a largely career focused forum? Like I can get trolling on Reddit or Facebook since it’s largely a social experience, but how sad and bored do you have to be to post stupid content on an investment banking forum lol? Also are there any moderators? Genuinely curious. If so, how is this type of shit allowed?

Not quite. Pretty sure that this is meant to be an insult of some sort, but find it pretty funny that you choose the university I’m studying at to use. What does this even mean? From what I can gather, Durham offers student sex work training, and you’re trying to say I’m interested in the sex industry? But even if I was studying at Durham, would that make my complaint of not enjoying seeing racist and unhelpful shit on this forum any less relevant? Like bro, at least use something like being a liberal as an insult or assuming I work for a “lower tier” bank like 90% of people on this forum.

I agree heavily with this, I totally forgot about those posts. Reading those always feels similar to those real life situations when a dude is trying to be funny telling some random story that’s meant to be “ironic” or some shit and no one fucking cares.
To play devil's advocate, I actually see why there are some trolls in here. If you go to target and then work in finance/consulting, there is really nowhere you can speak out anything edgy cause you would then risk your career and life. So the only place is internet. And then, on the internet, you can't post shit on Facebook under your name cause that once again would endanger your career and life. And Reddit is a trash can, why would anybody want to talk to anybody in there - it's just a bunch of lazy dumb little kids, I wouldn't want to talk to any of them, not in person nor virtually. So the only place to speak out edgy shit is here.

Agreed. Many times I have a good laugh at these troll posts because although they are low quality, I can rarely find anything remotely edgy or irreverent anywhere else. I personally don't want to ban these posts. Instead there should be some way for users to mute them.

While I personally find a majority of the topics and comments not to my personal liking, I, unlike you, simply move on having wasted 30 seconds of my time.
This is one of the last bastions left of free thinking folks who are willing to wade into topics that are important to have a conversation about (racial equity, diversity, personal issues, money, etc).
Stop whining about the "quality" of postings here and stop suggesting it needs to be fixed. Unlike you, I will let the "market" determine the posting quality and not some quasi-woke group of abhorrent dissenters hell bent on shaping everything to their world view.
You clearly think WSO is Parler for finance but a majority of the people that use this site use it to get information for recruiting. You have to realize normal people don't spend their free time talking about work. Troll posts are not only a waste of space but actively encourage the retarded freshman/intern posts that people are constantly complaining about.
If you want to "wade into topics that are important to have a conversation about" then talk to real fucking people. If your purpose is to broadcast your perspectives to online strangers, then respect the rules and guidelines of the forum whose services you are using. It really isn't hard.

Sometimes not even this is possible. Plus, we're on the internet, the whole point of which is to connect people who would never meet in real life.
Though this site is mostly used for recruiting info, there are quite a few productive discussions here. I'd hate for that to be taken away and have this place turn into reddit.

Please go ahead and explain it to me, I beg of you. I am perfectly okay with posts that actually try to breach controversial topics like diversity recruiting and class-discrepancy. I think it's important to have that kind of discourse online, and completely understand the anonymity aspect of WSO as attractive. That is not what I'm arguing against, and just like you, I simply move on from opinions that I find not to my personal liking. What I am arguing against are trolls who post this kind of bullshit just to get a rise from people. Discussions are great, but there's a difference between an actual discussion and a troll post.
