Advice for recruiting timing for sophmore transferring Spring 2026

Hello all,

I'm transferring into Baruch for Spring 2026 after striking out at my current school for the past year in order to give myself a better chance. Currently, I'm a junior, but due to some credits not transferring and having to take some business school prerequisites again, I'm extending my graduation by a semester.

As it stands, I have zero internships/finance experience on my resume outside of school. I got my school's investment fund as well as the finance club,b but I could not get an internship anywhere. I'm hoping to get into Baruch's hedge fund as well as get into the Financial Leadership program to give myself a better shot at landing an internship. However, I'm worried that since recruiting is so early and I don't start until January 26, if I may be out of the running for SA 2027. I'm networking where I can with alumni fromBaruchh, but content-wise wise my resume is going to be the same as it has been until I start.

Would appreciate any advice on what to do.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a structured plan to maximize your chances for SA 2027 recruiting as a sophomore transfer to Baruch in Spring 2026:

1. Understand the Recruiting Timeline

  • SA 2027 recruiting will likely begin as early as Spring 2026 for elite boutiques (EBs) and bulge brackets (BBs), with some processes extending into Summer 2026 for middle-market (MM) and boutique firms.
  • Since you’re transferring in January 2026, you’ll need to hit the ground running to avoid missing early deadlines.

2. Prioritize Networking Immediately

  • Start networking now with Baruch alumni and professionals in your target roles. Use LinkedIn, Baruch’s alumni network, and platforms like Handshake to connect with people in finance.
  • Focus on building relationships rather than just asking for referrals. Schedule informational interviews to learn about their roles and ask for advice.
  • Leverage Baruch’s reputation: Baruch has a strong alumni base in finance, especially in NYC. Use this to your advantage.

3. Strengthen Your Resume Before January

  • Since you lack internships, focus on building relevant experience before transferring:
    • Remote/part-time internships: Look for boutique firms or startups offering remote finance internships. Even a few months of experience can make a difference.
    • Certifications: Complete certifications like Wall Street Prep, CFA Level 1 (if feasible), or Bloomberg Market Concepts to demonstrate technical skills.
    • Personal projects: Create a stock pitch, financial model, or market analysis to showcase your interest and skills in finance.

4. Maximize Baruch’s Resources

  • Once you start at Baruch, immediately join:
    • Baruch’s Hedge Fund Club: This will give you hands-on experience and a strong talking point for interviews.
    • Financial Leadership Program (FLP): This is highly regarded and can open doors to top firms.
    • Career Services: Use Baruch’s career portal (e.g., Handshake) to apply for internships and attend recruiting events.
  • Spring 2026 recruiting events: Attend as many as possible to meet recruiters and alumni.

5. Target Sophomore Summer Internships

  • Since SA 2027 recruiting may be competitive, focus on securing a Summer 2026 internship at a boutique or middle-market firm. This will:
    • Build your resume for SA 2027 recruiting.
    • Provide you with talking points for networking and interviews.
  • Apply broadly to boutique investment banks, wealth management firms, and corporate finance roles.

6. Prepare for Technicals and Behaviorals

  • Use resources like the WSO IB Interview Course to master technical and behavioral questions.
  • Practice stock pitches, DCF models, and market trends to stand out in interviews.

7. Extend Graduation Strategically

  • Extending graduation to December 2027 gives you an extra summer to recruit. Use this time to:
    • Secure a Summer 2027 internship if you miss SA 2027 recruiting.
    • Position yourself for full-time recruiting in Fall 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Start networking now to build relationships and get your name in front of recruiters.
  • Secure a Summer 2026 internship to strengthen your resume for SA 2027.
  • Leverage Baruch’s clubs, programs, and alumni network as soon as you transfer.
  • Focus on technical preparation and certifications to demonstrate your skills.

By following this plan, you’ll significantly improve your chances of landing a competitive SA 2027 role despite starting late. Keep pushing forward—Baruch’s resources and your determination can make a big difference!
