Advice on best way to renege an accepted offer with BB OPs due to accepting offer in Consulting
Preface: I'm currently a senior un undergrad. Last summer I interned at BB in the OPs division. I don't need to preach to this crowd about the monotony of an OPs job, but yaaaa, the internship made me realize how badly I wanted/needed to do a client-facing job to grow my career and feel happy at work. I set my heart on consulting.
Rewind to late August: I receive a full-time offer from this BB in OPs in August. They say they needed to know in 3 weeks. Issue being that my school's recruiting season wasn't going to heat up for a 2-3 weeks and then it would encompass weeks of different levels of interview (first, second, final, etc). Ultimately, the deciding factor to accept BB offer was due to the fact that I'm married with a baby on the way.
Fast-forward to present: I have received somewhat of a dream consulting job offer. The team I'll be on aligns perfectly with future career goals, I'll be client-facing, and my network and skill sets will grow exponentially in comparison to BB OPs. Doesn't hurt that my base pay increase will fall around 54%. Money doesn't matter at the beginning of a career, rather it's the skills your gaining, but still, with a growing family it doesn't hurt to have a little pay bump.
I just accepted the consulting job and now I have to break it to the BB HR. It really pains me to do this, BC it's not at all in my character. However, I feel I was forced into this situation by being given only 3 weeks to accept, thus rendering useless my senior year recruiting opportunities.
How's the best way to approach this situation? Do I even mention that I received an offer from another firm (obviously won't mention the name of the other firm) that better aligns with my interests and goals? Do I even mention I received an offer? Do I just keep it simple and sweet and just say sorry I have to rescind my acceptance, apologize for inconvenience, and end it with a "Hey, I really did love working there for a summer; it was a great job"? Or do I make up a lame excuse like "I want to travel" or "Hm, I'm thinking I wanted to be a stay at home dad"?
Maybe I'm overthinking this but please, any advice is graciously needed.
Just my .02 but I don't think that it will help you by saying why you are reneging. Probably best to just do it succinctly.

Agree. A short short e-mail will suffice. The faster it leaves their mind the better. Don't want some long explanation that potentially gets forwarded around w/ your name attached to it.
