Advice on Follow-ups

I've been actively searching for entry-level jobs in NYC over the past couple of months. One smaller firm seemed particularly interested in my background and brought me in for an interview. That led to a series of follow-ups, seven interviews with nine people in total, and two case studies (one of which was an extended take-home assignment over a weekend).

After about a month and a half, I was told the final step would be an interview with the CEO. However, when I joined the scheduled call, he didn’t show up. I was told it would be rebooked due to their busy schedule, but it’s now been nearly a month and a half without any update. I sent a follow-up email two weeks ago and haven’t received a response.

Should I send another follow-up at this point?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach this situation:

  1. Send a Polite Follow-Up Email: It's reasonable to send another follow-up email at this point. Keep it professional, concise, and polite. Acknowledge their busy schedule, reiterate your interest in the role, and inquire about the status of the interview with the CEO. For example:

Subject: Follow-Up on Interview Process Dear [Recipient's Name], I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to follow up regarding the final interview with [CEO's Name] that was mentioned as the next step in the process. I understand how busy things can get, but I wanted to kindly check if there have been any updates or if there’s a good time to reschedule. I remain very enthusiastic about the opportunity to join [Company Name] and contribute to your team. Please let me know if there’s anything further I can provide to assist in the process. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, [Your Full Name]
  2. Timing Your Follow-Up: Since it’s been two weeks since your last email, now is a good time to follow up. If you don’t hear back within another week or two, you might consider one final follow-up before moving on.

  3. Consider Other Opportunities: While waiting, continue applying to other roles and networking. As highlighted in WSO threads, persistence and diversification in your job search are key. You don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket, especially when communication has stalled.

  4. Be Prepared to Move On: If you still don’t receive a response after your next follow-up, it may be time to move on. As frustrating as it is, some firms may not prioritize communication with candidates. Keep your focus on opportunities where your time and effort are respected.

Remember, persistence is important, but so is knowing when to redirect your energy to more promising opportunities. Good luck!
