Always necessary to meet networking contacts in person before having them go to bat for you?

I have talked on the phone once with 1-2 people across a wide range of banks. For some of these people to go to bat for me when recruiting season comes around next spring, is it absolutely necessary for me to meet up with them in person? I have met some in person already for coffee, but I don't have the time or money to fly to different cities to meet all of my contacts in person before recruiting season. Do 1-2 follow up phone calls work as well?

Depends on your profile as a candidate - for example, 3.3 from non target? Yes, you should meet them in person as their superiors would question pushing that through. 3.7+, good school, they will have less issue "going to bat" for you as you'd probably get an interview anyway.

Develop a relationship with people, have 4-5 phone calls or emails over the next year if possible. Not necessary to meet them in person if you can keep in touch and hold up your end with strong resume.
