Am I too late? - Rising college senior
I'm a rising college senior but plan to graduate in December 09. I wanted to intern this summer but due to unforseen family issues I was unable to leave home this summer. Because I will graduate in 4 1/2 years, I will have next summer to intern and up to this point haven't worried about it too much. I have been doing my research on what IB to intern for and beacause I will technically not be a "rising" senior I can't sleep. I have been my fraternity's treasurer, house manager, alumni relations chair, and have served on our judicial board. I have worked in alumni relations for Relay for Life, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Along with that I have a 3.8 GPA and plan to work at the local Edward Jones branch or Bank of America this school year. Will the fact that I am in the middle of my senior year and not a rising senior ruin my chances of interning with the likes of JP, Merrill, Goldman, etc? Someone please give reason to sleep better at night?!
1) Do you go to a target? If so, maybe. 2) Employers will want to know why you are graduating in 4.5 years. You should have a good reason.
Short answer is yes, chances are slightly dented but I wouldn't say ruined. While it happens occasionally, it is more apt not to happen.
The only time i've seen seniors "intern" were if they were part of a 5 year program my school offered. I am pretty sure banks knew this special type of student, so they accommodated accordingly. But these students graduated with two degrees.
Forgive the incoherence -- long day at the office.
I go to UGA, so no I am not a target school. I am graduating in 4.5 years because my father's health has been failing the past year (this is why I couldn't intern this summer).
That's a tough one. (Sorry about your dad).
I think other people can give you better advice, but I imagine it would be along the lines of network, reach out to alums who are in the industry, and get as much experience as you can with your potential internships with BofA and Edward Jones.
I'm shifted half a year because I took a semester off 2 years ago for an injury. End result, I'm currently set to graduate this coming fall, though technically it's my 8th semester.
Anyway, I can say from experience that it didn't appear to impact my ability to undergo recruiting in the spring for the summer. I was able to get a bunch of first and second round interviews with BB's and ended up with a SA in S&T at one of them.
FYI, I'm a non-business major at a semi-target. Just start doing your homework now and be ready to really go after those interviews when the time comes. No doubt it's going to be a tough recruiting season.
