I think it's still positive. Keep in mind that he is really high up in the firm as you noted so he must be very busy. There was another thread recently where it was noted that typically MDs can pretty terse in emails, but it's not because they hate you or are impolite. It's only because they have so much else to deal with that they only have time to write a few words.
I've had MDs brag to me about how many emails they receive every day during corporate presentations. An MD at Jefferies told me he receives more than 100 emails a day most days.
