Asking about potential salary for SA offers?
I am deciding between multiple SA offers, but I have found it extremely difficult to find hard salary numbers for these firms online or on this site. How would you go about asking what potential salary would be as a first year analyst, assuming you get a return offer? Would you ask HR or would you ask past/current employees of LinkedIn?
Is this for IB? Base salary will be essentially the same across all BB’s and a bit higher at some EB’s. The comp overall will be very similar for the first few years, and generally your first year base will be your SA base (they just prorate). If not IB then there can be larger deviations.
One firm is a boutique IB, not an EB. The other isn't IB but is in asset management in a niche sector of a very large firm.
That makes it harder. First thing to compare is the SA salary, that is probably going to be your base for your first year.
If the boutique IB is reasonable (I.e. not an EB, but a legitimate shop) then you should expect similar to BB “street” comp (but again also diff your base).
It is a bit tough to ask employees, but you can check online (sounds like you already did) and discussing “bonus ranges” or “potential bonus” is fine (probably can check with HR).
Also the role in the large asset manager matters. in general buy side pay more than IB, but “asset management” is broad, and large shops have so many different roles. You should check the base as a comparison point, the top places will be at least higher than IB. That should give you a sense of what to expect in total comp.
But I saw some threads which suggest that new analyst base salary for investment role within BlackRock is not that high, probably 75k?
That sounds right, but again BlackRock is huge, and so while there will be structured programs you need to make sure you are looking at comparable roles. I don’t have entry level numbers for them, but I imagine they are around IB maybe a bit less (which is where $75k gets you) and in general, outside of a few groups, pay will be less than IB. Large asset managers at the junior level won’t pay as much as IB but the hours also won’t be as terrible.
