Asking Boss about Applying For Another Job

Here is the situation... working for a large bank that I really feel a great fit with, but I’m not in the department I dream to be in long-term. The bank has a position available for what I want to do long-term, but it will be very competitive. How do I approach my current manager about this without screwing myself over?

For example, what if I apply / interview, don’t get the job, and then my boss decides to start looking over me for future opportunities in my current team / department? I’ve already been hinted at as being considered for future movements where’s I'm at now, so I don’t want to compromise this by my boss thinking I will jump ship.

Thanks for the help.

I’ve found that good companies reward top performers and place them in the roles that interest them the most.

This isn’t always the case in companies, so use your discretion to play the cards right.

I used to be in a large F500 company and when we would internally apply, it would CC the whole application for EACH time applied to my boss. I asked him if he was cool with me applying and he was positive about it.

With that being said, continue to be a top performer in your current group. If you’re asking to switch and are slacking off even in the slightest, it’s not going to work out well for you.

So main thing is just bust your ass twice as hard now if you’re considering a switch. Internal hires usually get a call from future manager to current manager to get some feedback - so make sure you have nothing but high regards.

this completely depends on your current boss, as an emotional human being. Some bosses want to help the people below them...some bosses want to stomp on the people below them, and just want to keep what they've got. Some people are petty...others are generous. You need to know what type of person your boss is.

just google it...you're welcome
