Asking for Contacts on Networking Call
Know there was just a post on this but not many serious replies. I’ve started networking for ‘26 recently and whenever I get off a call / send a followup I never ask for other contacts at the firm - I feel like it just feels super transactional and I don’t like to come off like that. I usually just let the person offer to refer me to someone, and I’d say 40% of the time on a good call this has happened.
Just want to hear from bankers on the desk - given the context of a call actually going well, is the ask fine? Or does it rub you the wrong way.
Not a little early to be networking for SA2026?
(not OP, also '27 grad) My school's IB advisor recommends starting now because bankers tend to be less busy, and you can also maintain the relationship over a longer period.
I initially was asking for other contacts, but found that even if the banker said they'd think about it (and after a follow-up), I'd never get any, so I stopped. When I spoke to our career advisor about it, she said that you're better off asking this to VP+ than AN/AS.
As someone who happily takes networking calls when I have free time. I PERSONALLY don’t like when the call is ended with “do u have anyone else I should reach out to talk to?” Or “do you have any coworkers you could recommend me to?”
It is a little irritating to me because I took time out of my day to entertain a call from someone who
a.) I don’t know
b.) likely didn’t come from my school
c.) i gain nothing from talking to - who is only talking to me because they believe it will help them get an internship / job.
I get it because I was in ur shoes once but to the banker on the other end of the phone, just feels like ur using our call as a stepping stone to talk to someone who’s more important / has more pull when it comes to recruiting.
Just my ¢2, others could feel different
Did u ask for more contacts when u were recruiting?
Thanks, I definitely feel the same. Just curious, when you’re on a good call do you often provide contacts yourself? Or are you more likely to just offer to resume push.
I ask them for contacts if I feel the call went well. You gotta be able to read the room. If it went well I'll say, "do you recommend that I'd talk to anyone else in "x industry"?". I follow up a week after if no connect. Great strategy for broadening network, if you don't do it - you're missing out.
Isn't it too early now? For '26 recruiting
I mean it’s definitely early but non target non div might as well keep myself busy. Even without the networking aspect has been really helpful to learn more abt groups and advice from ppl on the desk imo.
I recruited for 2025 SA and only asked for contacts in the thank you email and only if the call went well.
If someone gave you a contact to reach out to what did you typically put as the subject line?
Tempore nemo nihil exercitationem quos. Molestiae ratione neque et rerum. Dicta culpa eos perferendis aut. Sit eum necessitatibus consequuntur placeat ea in est.
