Background check but was not on good terms with previous HR

Hi everyone, I'm a little worried about background checks as I previously did an unpaid internship under a shady boss last year. Typically for background checks, do they only call your most recent employer or will they call all of the employers listed in your CV?

My current internship is at a large MM (think HSBC/BNP/RBC) so I have no worries about that at all. However, the previous year I did an unpaid internship at a start-up company. I'm worried the employment verification during background check would be problematic as the HR did not want to let me go at the end of my contract and tried their hardest for me to stay or do it part-time, gaslighting me about how they view me as a valued employee and all but of course with unpaid internships, they were just trying to leach off me. Essentially they made it sound as if I had no intentions of actually contributing towards the company and was just using it to beef up my CV.

Mainly I'm worried that during background check, the HR may not verify my employment due to personal grudge and reasons like that. Will appreciate any advice and feedback, thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding your concerns about background checks:

  1. Employment Verification Practices:

    • Large Firms: Typically, large firms only provide dates of employment and job titles when responding to employment verification requests. They often do not delve into the reasons for termination or other details due to liability concerns and data protection practices.
    • HR's Role: HR departments at large firms act more as facilitators. They may not have a significant say in the hiring process but are responsible for conducting background checks and verifying employment details.
  2. Handling Discrepancies:

    • Proactive Communication: If there is a discrepancy in the dates or details provided by your previous employer, it might be beneficial to reach out to HR proactively. This can help clarify any misunderstandings and show your willingness to address potential issues.
    • References: Ensure that you list references who can vouch for your work positively. If your previous HR might not provide a favorable review, consider listing a team member or supervisor who had a good working relationship with you.
  3. Background Check Strategy:

    • Timing of Disclosure: It is often advised to address any potential issues later in the hiring process rather than upfront. By the time HR conducts a background check, you would have already demonstrated your value to the prospective employer, making them more likely to give you a chance to explain any discrepancies.
    • Third-Party Checks: Background checks are often conducted by third-party firms. These firms will contact the employers listed in your CV to verify your employment details. They rely on the information you provide, so ensure that your CV is accurate and up-to-date.
  4. Best Practices:

    • Honesty: Do not lie or provide false information about your employment history. Instead, be prepared to explain any gaps or issues if they arise during the background check.
    • Documentation: Keep any documentation or correspondence from your previous internships that can support your claims if needed.

By following these guidelines, you can navigate the background check process more effectively and mitigate potential issues arising from past employment experiences.

you have already started your internship at the MM so what are you worried about? Also they don’t care about unpaid internships
