Background Check Paranoia

Has anyone ever been rejected after a background check? Completed a superday and was asked to give references and do a background check. My references are fine and my background is clean, but everywhere I check and from my past experiences, references and background checks typically come after a written offer is extended. I know there are still other candidates interviewing for the position as well.

Has anyone ever been in this position before? I really want this position and I guess I'm worried/paranoid/anxious..any insight would be helpful.
