Bates/Colby College - IBD / Top Internships

How are Bates/Colby College viewed on the Street? I have a choice of either pursuing a Math/Econ Double major, an Econ Major, or doing the 3-2 Engineering program with Columbia (in which I would major in Financial Engineering). However, the courseload is completely brutal for the Columbia program; requiring upper level physics, chemistry and math. I am also an athlete, and thus, have less free time. Would simply an Econ degree be enough? or would you suggest shooting for the 3-2, which would be grueling.

Sidenote: being a URM, is it possible for me to get into the Morgan Stanley freshman enhancement program from my school?

Thanks in advance -G

Bates/Colby are both far from the street (geographically), you will have very little (if any) support from the school and the majors are generic. They aren't targets so you will be in the "other" bucket along with all of the liberal arts schools. If you want to go this route, you will have to network your ass off at significant expense to you in terms of time/money if someone wants to meet you.

Your best bet is the 3-2 program, if you have decent time management skills, being an athlete is not a big deal (former athlete here). Depending on your sport, the coaches can be understanding when things are brutal for you.

What do you consider "other"? What about Hamilton, Colgate, or Lafayette, as they are geographically closer to NYC? In comparison to Bates/Colby? I heard Colby does much better than Bates.

Thanks

With regards to the schools you mentioned, they are definitely closer to the Street which helps them. They would definitely be in the "other" bucket though (Target/Other being the options).

I have no real visibility into the Colby/Bates in terms of placement these days. It was probably better when Bob Diamond was CEO of Barclays, they at least did OCR at Colby then. Not sure if they still do but they probably have some leftovers from that era in the bank. Not sure if any equivalent existed for Bates.

Of these Colgate places the best and is definitely a cut above the rest. Have you considered Middlebury (obviously harder to get into) or Wesleyan at all?

I wish I considered Middlebury earlier. During the app process I mostly focused on schools near NYC and thought VT and ME to be too far. I applied to Bates last minute and definitely wished I applied to Midd (oh well, not much I can do now). Wesleyan was too granola for me. Are there any other schools that are great for placement but not the top 3 (williams, amherst, midd)? I know the college app season is almost over but want to know your opinion.
