BB Phone Interview to In Person Interview? NEED ADVICE!

Hi all,

So, I need some of your advice... QUICK!

I go to a non-target, 4.5 hours or so away from NYC, but I live and want to work in NYC.

I received a phone interview with Bank of America for IBD (date is TBD). 2 weeks ago I received a phone interview with GS for IBD, but got rejected.

My past interviews have gone very well in person, where I can show my professionalism, eye contact, etc.

My question is: Is it out the ordinary to request an in-person interview with B of A because I think I am a better interviewer in-person? (I would drive to NYC). Does this seem pretentious? or would it come off as determined? If I am willing to go to NYC, and would rather, should I ask?

From your experience, let me know if this is a good idea, or not and what the repercussions may be, if any.

Also, advice for the Bank of America 1st round phone interview for IBD would be greatly appreciated! (Tech, Behav?)

Thanks guys!!

Phone interviews are tougher. I'd offer to drive to NY at your own expense for an in-person interview. I wouldn't offer as a reason for the request that you do better in in-person interviews. You don't need to offer a reason unless they ask. Simply ask if it's possible to have your interview in-person instead of over the phone, and that you're willing to arrange for your own travel at whatever time is convenient for the interviewer. It's a much better option if you're a better interview that way, and it does show your commitment.

If you have to interview over the phone, here are a few suggestions that might improve your performance:

  1. put on a suit for the interview. it sounds ridiculous since no one will see you, but it will get you in the right frame of mind and that will come across over the phone 2.Remove any distractions...cell phone, computer, loud roommates 3.Smile. It comes across over the phone 4.Speak clearly.
  2. Listen carefully to the question and don't interrupt.
  3. Practice with a few people, ideally someone with IB experience, a career counselor, someone else with at least a few years experience and get feedback.
