Best Things to Focus on as Incoming Sophomores

Have heard about the following, standard things to be actively working on for incoming freshman:

(a) networking (b) searching for IB/PE Boutique firm for F’22/S’23 off-cycle internship (c) expose yourself to technicals

First, I wanted to ask if there’s any additional things to start doing. Second, I’d like to know which should be prioritized (and why) or if one or another isn’t important for this stage. Target audience for responses should be semi/non target kids who are looking to stand out.

Couple of questions: for networking, I’ve heard comments saying that 3-5 emails/day to alumni and/or LinkedIn connections is beneficial BUT have also heard that networking is useless until October-December (if you’re trying to be proactive). How might networking look from the perspective of current IB’ers at this stage from freshman? Is now a good time? Any strategies to elongate the connection for 2nd/3rd/4th calls? For off-cycle internships, what’s the best strategy to approach? Is it best to be directly ask for off-cycle internships in email, or should you try and connect on personal level before asking? I haven’t delved into technicals, so I’m not sure how I can market myself. Also, what’s common practice for interviewing?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Is it alright if I DM you on this matter? Been having the same questions as I use this summer to network and get prepared on technicals.
