Breaking into IB after graduating w/ no previous experience
I graduated from a mid-tier ivy with a math degree in 2021 and am kind of just realizing that I don't want to be broke forever while chasing a medical degree so I've been randomly applying to IB and related banking jobs for the past 6 months hoping I would land something that starts in fall 2022 lol. I avoided all things finance in college and didn't learn anything about the process, so am playing a huge game of catch up, but through random strokes of luck I have interview experience at BB including Goldman Superdays (that didn't work out, clearly). I do have an Asset Management offer at the moment however the pay is not as high as I'd like (around ~90k total) and ultimately I believe I'm more interested in investment banking.
I wanted some honest takes as to whether or not its possible to participated (and maybe succeed!) in the 2023 FT recruiting process or if banks will automatically turn down my resume seeing that I'm in my 2nd year out of undergrad. If you think there's still a chance, would hugely appreciate some advice on next steps.
For more on me: URM (woc) and my resume makes it clear I have a lot of technical skills rooted in CS and data science
Also, I feel that I should mention I was so new to all of this that I don't even have a LinkedIn-- since medical school related jobs and positions require little to no networking I never bothers, specifically because I'm a highly private person, and by the time I decided to switch gears I figured it would be pitiful to receive a networking message from some girl w/ 10 connections who are all just her close friends
Maybe someone else can chime in, but why not go for a more techy role?
Either a faang type role, or a quantitative role?
Those roles look for people like your background, and pay just as well or even more than IB.
Considering you went to an IVY, they maybe willing to overlook the work experience side.
