Can I ask for internships in multiple sectors?

Hi everyone,

I recently came in touch with someone who has a very senior position at an investment management firm and who offered help regarding internships. He told me that I should send him an email with what type of internship I was looking for and he would try to help me by putting me in touch with other people.

I will be doing an internship in M&A right before the one I am asking him to help me for. As a result, I was wondering if it was ok to ask him to put me in touch with people not only in IB but in other sectors (PE, HF) as it would allow me to diversify a bit my experience and help me pinpoint exactly what I want to do. My question is, do you think that asking for experience in multiple areas of finance is a good idea or does that make me seem like someone who does not know what he wants?

I might be overthinking this but I do not want to mess up this opportunity. Any advice on how I should approach this would be greatly appreciated.

What year are you? Freshman or sophomore internship this would be okay (be careful with your wording though) for junior year I would try to narrow your interests a bit.

something along the lines of “I’m interested in IB, which is why I’ll be doing a M&A internship. However, after a lot of research, PE/HF (be specific here) is also something I’m interested in since insert how experience in IB will help here” should work. I had a person ask me a similar question and this is how I answered it
