Can someone explain to me DEI recruiting? International student

Why does context not matter for a lot of these firms for DEI? I understand the importance of representation and creating an equal playing field, but the truth is, most people are just gaming diversity quotas and aren't coming from unique/disadvantaged backgrounds.

I know wealthy prep-school diversity candidates getting jobs at top banks with 3.0 GPAs and Fs on their transcripts. I see people getting MBB left, right, and centre everyday on linkedin with mid experiences/grades

On the other hand, I see all these 4.0 asians...that win stock pitches, have their technicals drilled down, etc...having a hard time securing mid-tier bulge offers.

Can someone explain to me why its fair that a middle-class asian kid who studies his ass of/networks/etc... is automatically seen as a worse candidate then a diverse kid from a wealthy prep-school background?
