Can’t even get a searchfund role im so cooked.
I’m starting to feel a bit hopeless. I go to a non-target in Canada (Ryerson), but I’m pretty involved in all the relevant extracurriculars and do well in my classes (mostly As, some Bs, and one C). I didn’t go to Ivey or Smith because, honestly, I didn’t even know about target schools for finance. I originally wanted to do zoology (I know, random af). Even if I had known, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it, so there’s no point dwelling on it.
I know the market is tough, especially now, but I’m really starting to lose hope. I’ve applied to so many search funds with no luck so far. I’ve done all the modeling courses, competed in relevant competitions, and while I haven’t networked as much as I’d like, I’ve still put in a fair amount of effort. Any advice would be appreciated.
Since you're disadvantaged with your school, everything else about you has to be top tier. Some Bs? Nope not good enough to make up for Rye high. Coffee chats are just ok? Not good enough you have to be the most polished to stand out and cast away any doubts had on you due to your school name.
Above comment is absolutely right. Only 1-2 ryerson kid breaks into banking once every few years. Suggest you either transfer to a target / semi target or you can lower your expectations, start from commercial banking or smt and work your way up (maybe consider an MBA too).
The thing is I think it’s a bit late to transfer, considering I’m almost done with my second year. It’s worth saying I’m not too interested in IB but more so in corp finance or asset management I’m also very interested in real estate. But I think ur right I might have to do an mba which realistically makes me a double idiot since it’s more expensive than if I just went to Ivey or smith 🤦
