Can't Even Get An INTERVIEW for Internships?

Hey guys, I've recently graduated and currently looking for a job or internship.

The past 3 years, every summer I've applied for internships, but I don't even get a response. I've just been working in manufacturing where my dad works because the pay there for summer is insane.

I'm open to part-time, full-time, contracts, internships...anything that will allow me to gain good experience really.

Any advice? Do I just suck?

It's good money but it's really physically demanding. He doesn't want me working there and I don't want to work there too.

I don't care too much about pay at the moment. I need experience that will help me learn and further develop skills necessary in finance.

Couple of questions:

  1. Have you considered reaching out to people on Linked in (i.e. find the job you want, find out who holds that job and reach out to them even if its for a quick cup of coffee)
  2. Stop working for your dad - I know the pay is good but you're not building any identity capital (i.e. your not adding to your skill database in any sense) - I think you'll be amazed at how resourceful/motivated you'll become once money becomes tight
  3. Network, network, then network some more!

Thats just my 2c - I would also encourage you to focus on specific goals (say, network with 10 new people) and then just focus on that - plan, execute and review - repeat these 3 steps and you can't go wrong.

"Average people have great ideas. Legends have great execution"

This is where networking is key regardless of any industry.

Luck also plays a role too. Many of the places I have interviewed and found some work in was through "knowing someone" and the "key" players at the firm.

Majority of the time? Cold calling and just prospecting. I come off a friendly and approachable guy outside, so I tend to have random conversations and sometimes I will get a connection from it.

Get it, GET IT!

Hey guys, thanks for all the inputs. I've been trying to connect with some people from my alumni on LinkedIn, but none of them have accepted my invite lol..

Equity Securities Valuation Certification. I just googled that and nothing really comes up. I will be writing CFA 1 though.

I have acquired a decent amount of experience with financial modeling and research from being an ER Associate at my school's finance club. I really enjoyed it and I want to get into ER for a career.

I'm currently unemployed. What I meant in my original post was that I worked in manufacturing because I couldn't land any internships. Sorry for the confusion.
