Career Coach Suggestions

I’m a second-year analyst, and I’ve been suffering from serious burnout recently.

I’m able to do my job functions just fine for the ~60-70 hours per week it entails, but not much more. I know that I should be taking this time to brush up on technical skills and network (went through a phase of that six months ago, which went nowhere), but I find myself with absolutely zero motivation to do so.

I was never like this growing up. I went to a target, and would always happily pile recruiting and personal projects on top of my relatively coursework. I was very much a “the world is my oyster, shoot for the stars” type. Now, though I keep telling myself I’ll pick this back up, I wholly lack the drive to do so.

I’ve realized this is most likely because this isn’t my passion, and my heart really isn’t in it. I lack the genuine thirst to climb in this industry (that I wish I had), and, on top of my workload, the fortitude to simply tough it out and fake it.

What I think that I need to beat this burnout is a bit of a reset. To take a step back and make a “grand plan” I’m a little more excited about, that I see as actionable, and that I feel okay being held accountable for. Maybe the answer is another finance role, maybe it’s something completely different, maybe it’s more schooling. I have a decent sense of my skills, strengths, and weaknesses.

In my view, a good start would be a good career coach, someone who can help me see things more broadly and map this out, ideally someone familiar with Wall Street and situations like mine.

Any recommendations?

Not at all opposed. The way I see it, there are two elements to burnout: practical and psychological. A normal therapist can help with the latter, but I need help with the former as well. That is, some wisdom and logic in navigating next career steps, ideally from someone who knows a thing or two about being an analyst two in banking.

Aren’t those both valid questions - what I want out of life, and what a good hands-on practical plan of action in my career would be? It’s good to be oriented, but can it not help to have a concrete plan as well, and is there no one who can help me with this plan?

I agree that the typical “coach” would be vague and unhelpful, which is why I’m reaching out here to see if anyone knows of someone who gets it.
