Choosing between PE and ER BB offers -- any suggestions?
Hi guys,
I recently got offered a position in ER at a BB firm (not GS/MS, think CS/DB/Citi) as well as a position in an unknown PE firm.
My interviewer at the BB already warned me that I might not learn much from the internship, as most of their interns end up doing really menial work. While the internship at the PE firm is well-structured, and has classes for LBOs, M&As and other stuff.
I am guaranteed to learn more at the unknown PE firm, but an ER offer at the BB is much more prestigious.
Which offer would make me stand a better chance this fall for junior year internships?
Any input is appreciated.
If you want to do ER, go with the ER internship. Grunt work is the norm for summer interns at BB programs. You'll still learn more, both qualitatively and quantitatively, about ER and the public market from a sell-side perspective through the BB ER internship, which will set you up far better for ER and S&T recruiting. When you consider the respective brand names, which make a world of difference in recruiting, it should be an easy choice.
Between getting prestige on your resume and learning how to build LBO and merger models - one of these can be done by yourself.
Well if your goal was IBD then the answer might be different, but if your goal is ER then obviously BB ER as a rising junior puts you at the top of ER recruiting next year.
Go with ER, you can easily learn to model by yourself. It's very important to brand yourself during internship times...
