Considering declining final-round interview - will it close off all future with the firm?
A couple months ago, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do next, and talked to a bunch of headhunters, and have made it to a final round interview with another firm. The process has taken awhile, and in that time, I've decided now isn't the right time to consider the role. If I withdraw my name from the position, am I blacklisting myself from the firm in question? If it's something I might want to do in a few years, am I better off going to the interview still? Do I need to invent a reason, or just say I'm not interested anymore?
I mean if you've been interviewing with them for a couple of months and just back out at the last minute they're likely going to see that as a red flag. However, it also depends on your relationship with people at the firm. If you're close with people who have say and can explain why your decision to back out now is legitimate vs the other firm is just better you'd probably be fine. That said, assume you don't have a chance in the future.
Are you declining because you don't feel prepared for the role or is the other offer closer to your long-term interests?
