Hey all, I've been searching for info on moving to San Diego for consulting, and after reading what's available I'm curious what you guys know? I've been considering lateraling out of NYC and am curious if the finance sector is strong in San Diego, or if I'm just going to end up commuting to LA all the time. I figured I'd see what anyone here has to say before actually applying. Anyone with experience know?

Hey, I'm in pursuit of better waves and warmer climate as well. I'm hoping to make the move to the West Coast in the next 4-5 years.
Unfortunately, I don't have too much to add, but in my initial homework, SD's financial services sector seems lacking. On the asset/investment management side, San Diego doesn't have a strong presence (however my dream firm Brandes, is located there). IB in the West is mainly in LA/SF and very industry focused. Big 4 accounting firms have SD locations, but not sure how strong their consulting/advisory practices are. I also know Booz Allen has offices in SD, but I think government contracting work for the Navy is a primary focus (may be wrong on this).
Are you interested in consulting for the financial services sector? Or are you more interested in the finance industry as a whole?
SD is my dream city. My close friend lives in Ocean Beach, and I got to surf a bit at the Pier there. I also think I achieved some form of enlightenment/actualization when I had a breakfast sandwich from https://www.yelp.com/biz/oscars-mexican-seafood-san-diego-3</a">Oscar's.
I'm interested to hear what you've found so far.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'm former asset management and do consulting for financial services, but I would be very happy doing govvie as well, so I have to learn how gov't consulting or gov't jobs work. Seems like most of it revolves around the navy base but there's probably other stuff...these agencies/depts rarely exist in an area alone.
I'm not picky really, it's about the long term lifestyle for me. I've done a decade hustling in NYC, now I want to peace out and chill on the West Coast. And by West Coast I mean south of Santa Baraba and not LA if it can be helped. I'll take morning surfing any day of the week over NYC's night life.
So far, yes I saw Booze has a presence, big4, and a few smaller firms. I could even go back to industry for the right role that doesn't kill my work/life balance again. Doesn't seem there's a lot of banks outside of LA though. I'll keep poking around the jobs sites to see what's out there.

I'm looking for a list of the top consulting groups that have offices in San Diego. I know MBB all have offices in LA, but i don't think they have anything in San Diego. Is this true? If so, what other groups have offices in San Diego? I know consulting is heavy on travel, but I would still like to be based out of San Diego.

I went to M7 business school, had multiple offers for L.A., and wanted to live in San Diego due to situation with significant other.
I told them after offers, when deciding, that I was going to live in San Diego due to SO. They were all fine with it.
I normally fly out of San Diego. On Fridays, about 75% of the time I drive up to L.A. Leave around 5am to go up there, and leave office either before 3pm to return, or I wait until after 7pm to return (to avoid traffic).
It takes a little extra effort, but definitely doable.
