Contacting a recruiter months after rejection

Hi Folks,

Back in May, I interviewed for a position with a private bank. My brother who works in management with the firm told me to apply, so I did. I went through the interview process, I answered things honestly, and I was told that I would be called back later.

I received a call from the recruiter about a week later stating that, "while the interviewers liked speaking with you, they offered the position to an internal candidate." I was upset when he said that, but then he said that, "You should keep in contact with the people that interviewed you, and pick their brains. The office is growing, and as such later this year you should reach out to me and see if there are any opportunities."

I spoke with two of the interviewers, and I spoke with my brother. While the interviewers said that, they really liked me, and would like to work with me, my brother as told that it had more to do with how I approached the interview. My current shop is very laid back, and I thought that this was the norm (my current job has been my only job in banking), so I approached this interview is a lighthearted manor.

Since speaking with my brother I have made a stronger effort not to be so laid back, and to act more professional at all times (which rubs the folks at my firm the wrong way). My message and delivery still need work, but they are not where they were 4 months ago.

I noticed a posting on the company website for a position that will potentially come on line. I want to reach out to the original recruiter, but I am not sure if that is the proper way to handle this. Should I seek a referral from my brother first, and then email the recruiter? How should I best handle this?
