Corporate Finance to IT? (MO to BO?)
Currently I work in MO (corporate finance / Business Analyst) type work for the trading arm of a MM firm.
I have a finance interview on Friday with a BB in their Risk Technology department as a Business Analyst. It does seem geared towards project management, which was something I was lacking in my previous positions (my current position is geared towards budgeting / forecasting / etc). But the burning question is, how will this position me for B-School? I want to go into S&T after B-School.
Pros: -Something different --> More diverse background, as I have experience in Corp. Finance and Project Management. -The work is somewhat leadership related (project management). -I would be leaving a MM and going to a BB. -Higher comp (Over 20%+ increase in salary, of course that means nothing in the long run but does what signal does it send to the admissions committee? Is it positive - "He left for more money, obviously this company thinks he adds value"?) -Could possibly be leaving a dead-end job. I heard that the person who I replaced left because they weren't being challenged (and neither am I). Also, I've heard that they want me to stay for 5+, 10+ years, hell no.
Cons: -Going from middle office to back office? -I worked at my current job for 2 months - could I be burning bridges? Perhaps it looks bad on the B-School application, although I have a legitimate reason to do this -I want to do S&T after B-School, and I currently support people on the agency trading desk. Could leaving this position for the tech arm of a BB screw up my "story" when applying to B-Schools? I would say that I left agency trading because I saw that the industry was dying, commissions were being compressed, also it's not what I want to do, I wanted more leadership opportunities, etc.
