Creating a spring internship through networking

Hey all,

I am currently trying to get a worthwhile part-time internship for next semester by networking with individuals at local firms. I am a junior at the largest school (non-target) in my state (midwest), and there are a few smaller IB and PE firms close by. The thing is, none are currently looking for an intern for next semester.

So, has anyone had any luck "creating" an internship position for yourself through networking?

If so, any tips on what you did / stories to motivate me / advice from people in the industry on what would make you consider an intern where you are currently not doing so?

Thank you for all the help,

It's something I intend to do soon since I'll graduate off-cycle. Heard the most effective way of turning a no to a yes is to offer to work for free and to keep checking back to see if they start needing someone.

Keeping my eyes on this thread now, thanks for bringing up the topic OP.

Yeah, pretty much what the above poster said. Make sure you call EVERY local shop, don't just shoot them an email. By talking to them, you are more likely to get a straight up answer and feel for whether or not they want an intern, and of course if they don't, then mention unpaid. I had done this (with a meh gpa) and got 2 unpaid and a paid opportunity (took the paid). I don't have many finance opportunities in my area, so finding a finance oriented internship in general required some research.

Big yes to working for free. Over this summer, I was in same boat, except it was for fall...spent months contacting PE, IB, and even PWM firms but the responses to my cold-emails were even chillier.

I modified one line in my e-mail, saying I'm more than interested to work without pay etc., and within 24 hours I had a phone interview, and fast forward a week, I landed fall internship with current firm. Coincidence? Maybe...but I doubt it.

Get blown off by 99%, that's fine. It takes one person to say yes.
