Current Team Denying Internal Mobility
Over the last couple of months (4 to be exact), I have been looking for internal mobility opportunities within GS, as I'm just not a good fit (Eng/Math/CS background) for the work done in my current group (non-tech/quant ops). After much patience, networking, transparency, and best intentions, I have found a strats/tech team that is ready to welcome me, and with that team's manager, we agreed to a month's transition period starting today.
UNFORTUNATELY, when said team's manager notified my current team's managers of my leave, they freaked out (literally) and claimed/insisted I was "essential/critical/indispensable" (actual words used) to their team's daily/BAU workflow and the earliest they can have me leave is July as they can not afford to lose me until a new batch of new analysts arrive.
Bear in mind, I'm just a new analyst who has been out of school for barely a year and in this job for less (so how tf am I cRiTiCuHl?!). I'm not sure how to navigate such awkward terrain and I'm definitely not planning on staying on my current team until July LOL Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
This may be a result of not consulting your current manager about your intentions and since it's an internal move, may not have worked out in your favor as opposed to an external opportunity. I would go back to the other manager and try to push for a later start date so you have time to work with your current manager on a plan than can help you transition sooner than July if possible. Communication is key for all parties involved, most likely your manager doesn't appreciate being blind-sided and therefore trying to "hold" you back.
Without knowing more details and being politically not that savvy (frankly), OP if you can leave in July, then wait. Dude people are literally getting canned left and right in the broader economy.
You saw all the stimulus right? And that the US Gov't is planning for more. They are literally sending people checks... If I had come to you in mid-Feb and told you that in a month the gov't would be giving people checks you would have called me crazy. Right? Look what the Fed has done.
We are in a recession and finance is cyclical. Shops with huge trading businesses like GS (still) and IB franchises will be more cyclical than most. Pussy galore is spot on. The cuts may be savage after this cools down. Since in such environments companies are struggling (to put it mildly), aren't expanding, aren't raising capital in markets etc (ie generating fees for the bank).
Head down, work hard, be grateful, be friendly, amiable, and move in July.
Good Luck
