Current Team Denying Internal Mobility

Over the last couple of months (4 to be exact), I have been looking for internal mobility opportunities within GS, as I'm just not a good fit (Eng/Math/CS background) for the work done in my current group (non-tech/quant ops). After much patience, networking, transparency, and best intentions, I have found a strats/tech team that is ready to welcome me, and with that team's manager, we agreed to a month's transition period starting today.

UNFORTUNATELY, when said team's manager notified my current team's managers of my leave, they freaked out (literally) and claimed/insisted I was "essential/critical/indispensable" (actual words used) to their team's daily/BAU workflow and the earliest they can have me leave is July as they can not afford to lose me until a new batch of new analysts arrive.

Bear in mind, I'm just a new analyst who has been out of school for barely a year and in this job for less (so how tf am I cRiTiCuHl?!). I'm not sure how to navigate such awkward terrain and I'm definitely not planning on staying on my current team until July LOL Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm still performing to the best of my abilities so I don't give them any reason(s) to dismiss me. Also, if the problem seems to be that there will be no replacement for me until new analysts arrive in mid-July, why would they think about laying me off?

This may be a result of not consulting your current manager about your intentions and since it's an internal move, may not have worked out in your favor as opposed to an external opportunity. I would go back to the other manager and try to push for a later start date so you have time to work with your current manager on a plan than can help you transition sooner than July if possible. Communication is key for all parties involved, most likely your manager doesn't appreciate being blind-sided and therefore trying to "hold" you back.

I was very honest and transparent to my managers about how I felt about my job and my desire to transfer out of this group though so as to avoid this specific scenario. Seems that our team's workflow/load distribution and recruiting are very mis-managed, so bad that if we were to lose one person (me or anybody else) our deliverable production would grind to a halt.

The job is very frustrating in some aspects to be honest. I may do so for the duration of quarantine (hopefully 1-2mos.) but prepared to come out with more marketable skills and ready to look elsewhere.

Pussy galore:
Yes, I'm currently working with someone on GS' mgmt committee. Believe me, there will be a great deal of layoffs after this virus and this attitude will get you canned.

Your choice. You sound very entitled at the moment and not in total grasp of what's ahead.

Agree, I have worked in some really bad work environments before so if you need helpdealing OP you can PM me

Without knowing more details and being politically not that savvy (frankly), OP if you can leave in July, then wait. Dude people are literally getting canned left and right in the broader economy.

You saw all the stimulus right? And that the US Gov't is planning for more. They are literally sending people checks... If I had come to you in mid-Feb and told you that in a month the gov't would be giving people checks you would have called me crazy. Right? Look what the Fed has done.

We are in a recession and finance is cyclical. Shops with huge trading businesses like GS (still) and IB franchises will be more cyclical than most. Pussy galore is spot on. The cuts may be savage after this cools down. Since in such environments companies are struggling (to put it mildly), aren't expanding, aren't raising capital in markets etc (ie generating fees for the bank).

Head down, work hard, be grateful, be friendly, amiable, and move in July.

Good Luck

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.

Agreed. It was not my intention to come off as entitled, my apologies. Putting it all in perspective, it may be time to work hard and be thankful. Not a bad idea to just find new ways to add my quant/tech skills/interests to my current work.

I am sorry but this is off topic, but I am trying to move internally as well and would appreciate any help regarding the questions asked by strats team in interview

bump. Interested in outcome.

I am in a similar situation where I have gotten an offer with the new team in GS, but manager deems me 'critical' (i am not really). Are MDs/VPs able to overturn the offer? How does that work?

Bump.

I'm in the middle of a similar situation where I have an offer with a new team at a BB (coverage group to product), and they are discussing how to approach this with my current team. I'm on very good terms with the seniors from my current team and will very likely still be working with the junior staff here as I'm going to product.

It's still very political here as well, the new team is trying to get multiple DIR/MDs and potentially Co-Chairman to speak out against my current MD, but are also discussing having me raise this internally with my current team first. Market is good though and several other banks are hiring for this product group at my level.

Very interested to hear the process of anyone who's done this before. Thanks!
