I interned in a risk role at a BB, and I am afraid to say the prospects are not good.

That said, that very well could have just been this one firm, since our risk department was very well compensated and respected.

The reason why its a hard move is very much ego-driven. Here's how that psychological knot works: while risk is still considered middle-office, it is certainly more front than back. Significant client interaction, and, more importantly, the liberty to "think", which other MO roles like reporting and accounting lack. However, it is still classified under the "support" umbrella. This dissonance seriously bugs egos in risk and make them frantically avoid the perpetuating the perception of risk as just-another-support-group, i.e.: by transiting people between the back/middle.

Frankly most transit I have seen between risk is risk -> arbirtrage-esque groups in s+t or risk -> IB. I have seen people from other MO roles move into risk, but those were far rarer. Never really seen a BO -> risk.
