December job offer - can I delay?

So weird one - I just got a job offer in December. Without giving details about the position, I'm pretty happy about it but believe I can do better on comp/firm prestige. However, the company seems to want me to accept now and join after year-end bonus is paid.

But, obviously, I want to do more interviews in January when everyone is hiring. And I kinda feel like they're just trying to get me to sign now to lowball me on comp? The interviews I did for this were also a walk in the park and they gave me offer less than 12 hours after my second interview... Anyone got any advice of how to respond to this? Do I ask for a delay?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach this:

  1. Request a Delay Tactfully: It's perfectly reasonable to ask for some time to consider the offer. You can frame it as needing to evaluate the opportunity thoroughly or align it with personal commitments. For example, you could say:
"I’m very excited about this opportunity and appreciate the offer. Given the timing and my current commitments, would it be possible to have a bit more time to finalize my decision? I want to ensure I can give this the full consideration it deserves."

  2. Negotiate Start Date: If they’re pushing for a quick acceptance, you could negotiate a later start date. This gives you time to explore other opportunities in January while keeping this offer as a backup. For instance:
"I’d love to join the team, but due to some prior obligations, would it be possible to start after [specific date]?"

  3. Assess the Offer: If you feel the offer is lowballing you, consider countering. Highlight your value and market benchmarks. For example:
"While I’m very interested in the role, I was hoping for compensation more aligned with [specific range or market data]. Would it be possible to revisit this aspect of the offer?"

  4. Be Strategic: If you’re confident about better opportunities in January, you could politely decline or delay without burning bridges. Remember, as mentioned in WSO threads, opportunities for talented individuals often come around again.

  5. Avoid Bluffing Without Backup: If you’re considering bluffing about other offers, tread carefully. As noted in WSO discussions, this can backfire if not handled properly.

Ultimately, balance your desire to explore better options with the risk of losing this offer. If the firm is truly interested, they may be willing to accommodate your requests.

Had the same situation a month ago - took the offer and recruited during the job / WFH. It's pretty difficult to have something lined up in this market and those interviews in January aren't guaranteed.
