Deciding between two offers

Recently got two offers for Summer 2026 — one’s an equity research role at a top 3 asset manager, based in Toronto, the other’s corporate banking at a Canadian Big Five bank in NYC. I’m Canadian, currently going to school in the U.S., and hoping to work in nyc long-term in a buyside role like at a hedge fund. Would really appreciate any insights — thank you verrrry much!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Long-term Goals: Since your ultimate aim is to work in NYC in a buyside role like at a hedge fund, the equity research role at a top 3 asset manager in Toronto might align better. Equity research provides a strong foundation in analyzing companies, building models, and understanding markets—skills highly valued in hedge fund recruiting. However, being in Toronto could make networking and transitioning to NYC more challenging.

  2. Location and Networking: The corporate banking role at a Canadian Big Five bank in NYC places you directly in the U.S. market, which is advantageous for building connections and accessing more robust buyside recruiting opportunities. The U.S. market offers significantly more hedge fund and private equity opportunities compared to Canada, as highlighted in WSO threads.

  3. Exit Opportunities: Equity research roles, especially at top asset managers, are often seen as a stepping stone to hedge funds. On the other hand, corporate banking may not provide the same direct pathway to hedge funds, as it focuses more on lending and relationship management rather than investment analysis.

  4. Visa Considerations: Since you're Canadian studying in the U.S., working in NYC might simplify the visa process for staying in the U.S. long-term. However, transitioning from Toronto to NYC later could involve additional hurdles, as noted in WSO discussions about Canada-to-NYC moves.

  5. Work-Life Balance and Culture: Equity research roles might offer a slightly better work-life balance compared to corporate banking, but this can vary by firm. Additionally, the culture in NYC is often described as more competitive and fast-paced compared to Toronto.

Recommendation:

If your primary focus is to secure a hedge fund role in NYC, the equity research role in Toronto might provide better skill alignment, but the corporate banking role in NYC offers proximity to the U.S. market and better networking opportunities. Weigh the importance of location versus skill development in your decision. If you can leverage the NYC role to network aggressively and pivot to a more relevant position later, it could be a strategic move.
