Know a guy who delayed graduation for two years to get to gs/ms/jpm in Canada. He had 3 junior year summer internships (along with some fall / winter internships - think he landed the top bb thru a winter internship) that were 1) big 4 TAS in his home country in asia, 2) a major international commercial bank's IB division in hk/sg, 3) a mid tier European BB in Calgary and then finally the top BB.
I know this guy. Did he go to sauder?
Depends on two things: a) do you want to work in Canada or Europe b) is it a good VC fund.
For location, if you want Canada be patient and you will get something. Labor market is tight, and while it might be a few months if you have brand names and know your stuff you’ll be fine.
For the VC fund, pre-seed is dicey. Market is kinda messed up in VC land right now, and I’d only join a fund if they are established and have a track record. For example, are most of their LPs pension funds where they know they are likely to get another cheque when they raise again? Is this their first raise? How have portfolio companies done? Because not all VC experience is alike, and plenty of small early stage funds were able to raise over the past few years and are riddled with people that will teach you the wrong way to do things.
The vc firm is new, they have done I believe 10 raises in the last year since they were established. They have one notable one which has been moving pretty quickly. Other than that it’s a small fund, but it has some traction despite only being operational for two years.
How experienced is the team? What’s AUM? And how are they competitive on deals? Treat your decision like an investment, but instead of money it’s your time!
