1.) They know exactly what's going on. Don't worry. I want to make it absolutely clear that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in the recruiting process, and HR doesn't make hiring decisions, but the HR lady on the phone probably has about eight years and thousands of applications of wisdom on you. When a candidate stalls, 95% of the time, regardless of the reason they give, it's because they have another offer.
2.) They also know you're a college sophomore. Just a 19 year old kid. Two years ago, your mother practically tucked you into bed at night. They understand you were afraid to tell them you were considering another offer. If you were 25, this would be a different story. But you're young and it's OK. They know you're nervous and they know this is probably the first white-collar job you've ever been offered.
3.) They liked you enough to give you an extension.
4.) If you get the PE offer, call them FIRST and THEN send a pro-forma email so it's less awkward and you don't lose sleep about them getting it.
50% chance your parents counseled you on this already, and I'm going to say they're a lot wiser than I am. If they told you something different and they have any US-based white-collar work experience between them, please follow their advice.
I've got six or seven years of wisdom and experience on you. I don't know everything, but I know enough to tell you not to worry all that much about this.
IlliniProgrammer, your post was very informational and really puts me at ease. I will probably follow your advice. Do you think it will hurt my relations with the bank as far as junior year recruiting?
Maybe. It will be awkward with THAT HR rep if they see PE on your resume. But remember, it's not like Drexel Burnham and every other firm has a camcorder following you around on every interaction with their employees. Chances are, the HR rep will remember and everyone else will forget. The hiring manager who interviewed you and gave you a thumbs-up will just hear that you took an offer somewhere else.
Also, if you talked to your parents about this, and they have white-collar professional work experience in the US, and they counseled you differently, please follow their advice. They've got 3x, 4x, maybe even 5x my experience with this stuff and they know what your values are a whole lot better.
But just to be clear, HR's assumption is that you're pursuing another offer and they gave you a two week extension.
Just remember that if you get the PE offer, call the BB FIRST, THEN send a pro-forma email so you're not worrying whether or not they got it if you don't get a response.
^Neither of those are true. I have a 4.0 as a triple major, and network my ass off. I must attempted to set up at least 50 informational interviews this year. I'm Asian, btw.

I was in a similar pickle several years ago.

OK, now stop bragging before HR finds you.
