a few points:

  1. a deal could have popped up and his leaving may have had nothing to do with you, even if it did, you'll have to network with hundreds of people in your life, so one early attempt going poorly is no big deal

  2. if he referred you to a buddy to speak to that probably doesn't mean he hates you and probably does mean he would like to see you do well (unless he hates that guy too and think you guys are a good fit (only half kidding))

  3. did you bring a list of questions written out? also did you ask several questions all at once and then expect him to respond to all of them together? if the answer to either of these questions even resembles yes... never do that again. It is good to take things seriously, but it is better enough to show the intelligence and maturity to have real non memorized ideas and questions about someone's job/industry/firm and the ability to have a comfortable conversation is absolutely key

  4. never tell someone that you are still not sure that you want to do like banking (or whatever job they work in), even if that is the case. If you are unsure about banking say something like "i am very drawn towards banking from what I know, but my knowledge of the industry is limited" and then ask about stuff that you want to know about. Even if you are still unsure say that you would love whatever position is applicable in that industry and at that firm. If you end up not wanting to do banking, who cares, but if you do want to do banking this puts you in a stronger position. Who will the guy be more likely to hire/push through the kid who he spoke to that wasn't sure he wanted a job in the industry or the kid who was dead set on breaking in

anyway, just take a breath, relax and be logical when networking. Its very tough to do at first as networking is intimidating, but this is a great place for advice and you're starting to network earlier than most (way earlier than i did) so you should be good. Anyway take this advice as you want going forward and let things play out with the busy mm banker from your home town. Sounds like things are OK there. If he really hates you i highly doubt he'd respond to your email or sit down to lunch with you in the first place

Thank you very much for your response. I will polish my manner and try to be a better networker. I have never done something like networking lol.. didn't know that this needs to take effort as well.... its so fucking hard haha but thanks

This sounds like a pretty decent meeting, no?

1.) Bankers are busy, so when they have to run, it's usually urgent. They almost always have their Blackberry out, so don't worry about it. 2.) He actually met with you when he could've ignored you or just done a call. Think about it. 3.) He referred you to someone else. This expands your network and helps you out.

All in all, you should now know not to shoot question after question. Avoid this in future interactions and keep learning.

BB thing at lunch, no that's not a sign he hates you. His sole purpose in life at the moment is respond to every dumb fucking email his douche bag MD / VP / Associate sends as quickly as humanly possible wanting to know "where are we at with...," or "what's the status on...," as that is directly proportional to the size of his YE bonus and you're a jr. college kid pecking around for a job. He also doesn't hate you because he had to leave abruptly, his douche bag VP sent him a message saying "We just got back a hefty mark up from douche bag MD who's only going to be in the office for 2.5 more hours before he leaves to catch his flight and wants to review updated book before then. I want to review for 30min before we hand to him as I still need to give you my changes to integrate with his which I know you know that he always hates my changes and additional slides I make you do which will also be the first things he'll want taken out of the new draft when he sees it again but fuck you, you're and analyst I'm doing it anyway because I can just throw you under the bus like I typically do, so we need you to head back over ASAP".

He hates you because instead of casually having a friendly conversation about how he really feels about working banking, which he likely clawed tooth and nail for and focused on nothing else for four years in school just to get a chance to be miserable and sleep deprived for two years of his early 20's, and swaping stories about all the fun stuff you guys did at your school, you fired off a bunch of pre-loaded disingenuous sounding Vault guide style questions at him and afterwards started blathering on about how you're "on the fence" about doing banking and not 100% sure that's what you want but still want an analyst offer so you can keep your options open for after school if you decide against doing grad school or traveling for a year. Irregardless if that's actually what you said to him, that's how his sleep deprived brain interpreted it and yes he likely hates until he forgets you exist in 2-3 hours.
