Dinged or In?

So I had a final round interview this morning with four different MDs. First interview was average and the worst of the bunch by a wide margin. The second and third went perfect. Both guys said I was the best person they've talked to thus far. Last guy was a person who I had networked with previously and I knew going in and he reaffirmed that I had his support.

Also, I had a previous interaction with another SMD who should be involved in the hiring decision although isn't the sole decision maker. HR told me they have done interviews all last week, all this week and next week is the last round of interviews.

I got replies from 2 of the 5 guys that I sent out thank you emails (sent around an hour ago). One of the emails was a thanking me for following up and said "We'll be in touch as the process progresses."

On the surface everything seems good. But I was hoping for something from them indicating that I performed as well as I thought I did.

Do interviewers throw out comments like "you are the best guy I've talked to" and the other guy wrote 'A+' on the top on my resume. Any chance these guys are just totally f'ing with me or placating me in some way? Or am I being neurotic?

Yes, interviewers love to throw out the "you are the best guy I've talked to" lines to everyone who walks through the door. It is completely meaningless.

The reason is, it is a win-win proposition for the interviewers. Either they won't hire you, in which case you might be annoyed about the BS, but since you won't be working there they won't care what you think. Or they will offer you a job, in which case the lovey-dovey stuff in the interview leaves you with a better impression of the firm, and thus makes you more likely to take the job/be glad to work there.
