Do I need a career coach

Hey guys I’m currently in hs and a bit worried about IB recruiting. I got admitted to stern early and I’ve had private admissions consultant that helped me a ton (grades and stuff r by me but they still helped me a ton). I saw that for high finance career coaches r a thing and I wanted to ask if I needed it?

I went to a pretty good boarding school (good rep for top schools) and ppl still get private consultants so does that analogy carry over in college?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, career coaches can be beneficial, but their value depends on your specific situation and goals. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Your Current Position: Since you’ve already been admitted to Stern, you’re in a strong position. Stern has a solid reputation for placing students into investment banking (IB) roles, and you’ll have access to on-campus recruiting, alumni networks, and career resources.

  2. Cost vs. Benefit: Career coaching services can be expensive, as highlighted in WSO threads. For example, some programs charge thousands of dollars for a few months of guidance. Before committing, evaluate whether the cost aligns with the value you’ll receive. If you’re proactive, you might be able to leverage free or low-cost resources like Stern’s career center, alumni connections, and WSO forums.

  3. Alternatives: Many students break into IB without career coaches by networking effectively, preparing for interviews using resources like WSO’s IB Prep courses, and gaining relevant internships. Stern’s strong placement stats suggest you can achieve your goals with the resources already available to you.

  4. When It Might Be Worth It: Career coaches could be helpful if:

    • You feel lost navigating the recruiting process.
    • You lack confidence in networking or interview preparation.
    • You’re targeting highly competitive roles or firms and want personalized guidance.
  5. Do Your Diligence: If you decide to explore career coaching, research the service thoroughly. As noted in WSO discussions, some career coaches target less-informed candidates and may not deliver the promised results. Look for reviews, testimonials, and success stories before committing.

In your case, given Stern’s resources and your proactive mindset, you might not need a career coach right away. Focus on leveraging your school’s career services, networking with alumni, and using resources like WSO’s guides and forums. If you later feel you need additional support, you can revisit the idea of hiring a coach.
