Do what we are good at? Or do what excites us?

Hi All. Thank you in advance for reading this and adding any insight you have.

I have done a lot of soul searching and determined there are mainly two paths we can take in life and career - do what we are good at, or do what excites us. Sometimes we can have both, and what a wonderful life and career that would be. But for the rest of us, what do we choose?

For example, I am not a quant guy. Math was always hard for me. I took the AP math classes, and I scored well. But it did not come easy. Hours and hours of studying and homework.

Writing, reading, creativity, speaking, all were much easier courses and topics for me growing up. I don't want this to come off the wrong way, but I scored 5's on both AP literature and AP language exams in high school with zero study or preparation. I majored in History and won an essay award in college. I thrive in public speaking and would say I am creative and a problem solver. I like coming up with creative solutions to complex issues, in both a work sense and life sense.

I am looking to make a career pivot and need help. I cannot decide what to do! I know my skills, but I don't want to be a writer! I want a job that excites me. I know I am the only person who can figure that out, but would love any insight into the types of careers I should consider with the profile I have.

I have considered law, but I understand there is almost no point in going to law school unless it's a top top school, in order to land a role at a big firm. People who might have my background or skills, what did you do?

Finally, what is more important, a career based on our skills, or a career based on what EXCITES and energizes us?

Thank you in advance!
