I'm applying to SA internships at a bunch of banks. I think I made an impression on someone in HR at MS during the employer presentation at my school. Does it help at all that an HR person remembers me or is it necessary for someone in IB or S&T to remember me?

From my personal experiences, it rarely helps. The only time this might help is if for whatever reason HR is doing first round interviews (usually this never happens). Otherwise they have absolutely no say.
I don't know about the US, but in Europe HR very often conduct first round interviews. It is also common for boutique places to care very much what their HR have to say as these people (let's be honest, girls) have a feel whether a candidate would blend well with X, Y or Z team.
On the other hand though, this does not guarantee anything yet definitely is a plus for you.
She can pull your CV out of the pile. If you really have a good touch HR are probably some of the best contacts you can get. Much more useful than analysts and associates (which are useless by the way in the recruiting process).
HR also have contact with MDs and Ds on the floor and if she likes you can recommend you direct.
I don't think that Analysts/Associates are useless at all in the recruitment process, especially when (once again in Europe) it is usually either HR or Analyst/Associate level people who conduct 1st round interviews.
In Australia, is it usually HR for the phone rounds then Analysts level people for first round first that conduct the interview. They have probably already made a note of it of that impression and people interviewing you will be aware of it.
What? Analysts and Associates are usually the ones that conduct first round interviews so they're probably the most important in getting to superdays (this is where more senior people get more and more useful as they have more say).

Thanks for the feedback. I recently realized I might have a good contact. He's a college classmate (we have several mutual friends) who is a senior portfolio manager at a HF. How would you approach asking someone like that about getting an internship at their company? (Without sounding annoying)

No - not at all, unless you are a personal friend of their's or something. Analysts/associates are the most useful. At my bank, they are usually the ones that go through resumes and the ones that can push for someone to get a spot.
analysts and junior associates do not conduct interviews at my bank. being on good terms with HR has helped me tremendously and also made my on-boarding, other questions answered quickly and efficiently.
Never seen this either. Associates, especially alums, can recommend you to the director tho.
While analysts and associates do get to do OCR interviews, they are almost always paired up with a SVP/D/MD who is basically the decision maker. But to your question, knowing a HR person can't hurt and I've seen HR pull for candidates during resume selection roundtables (but the weight of their opinion depends on his/her pull with the school captain/head who is a senior banker)
You should be trying to make a great impression with everyone. That includes everyone from HR to the MDs to the assistants. You're overthinking this too much. All you need to worry about is being friendly, likeable, and memorable to everyone. And keep everyone in the loop of your journey. You'll have all your bases covered. Stop worrying about charting out how much of the decision is controlled by who.
Don't see how it can hurt. Maybe you can even leverage the relationship

When you guys are trying to get a interview in some firm. Do you guys enter in contact with HR or a person that works in the area of your interest?
