Doing an internship in an investment bank but specialized in a geographical area is contraining ?
Hi guys,
I am a French student in a top tier business school, here we have a system that allows us to do several six-month internships (from two up to three).
My first internship was with a big 4 in financial auditing, and my second internship is going to be Investment Banking within the biggest French bank BUT specialised in a very specific geographical area (with deals from 100 to 700M EV so mid cap) with a smaller team than the large cap team (like 10 people).
Does doing an internship in a specific geographical area and a smaller team in investment banking close doors for my next internship?
Could I aim for a generalist team in a large cap top bank at the end of my studies?
Thank you all,
If it’s either SocGen or BNP, you can, yes. It’s the classic (Central) European path towards investment banking: Big 4, Tier 2 IB (which SocGen abs BNP are prime examples of) and then Tier 1. Especially with French recruiters the names of SocGen and BNP will carry a lot of weight I don’t think doing mid-market transactions will hurt you. Of course, it’s nice to put your involvement in some billion dollar transaction on your CV but in the end, the purpose of this internship is for you to go to a BB/EB and do exactly these transactions. So having seen 3-4 mid-market transactions might be more valuable then having seen 1-3 large cap transactions.
