Fall Internships during Columbia

Sorry to ask a dumb question but has anyone who went to school in NYC found use in interning during the school year. Just transferred to Columbia for sophomore year and was wondering if pursing an internship now was worthwhile if I'm trying to break into IB. I think I saw on this forum MS has some kind of program but that it would be impossible with school work? Appreciate any insight!

Based on previous WSO threads, pursuing internships during the school year while attending Columbia can be quite beneficial, especially if you're aiming to break into Investment Banking (IB). Here are some insights:

  1. Leveraging Location:

    • Being in New York City provides a unique advantage as many top banks and financial institutions are headquartered there. This proximity can make it easier to attend interviews, networking events, and even part-time internships.
  2. Balancing School and Internships:

    • While it can be challenging to balance school work with an internship, many students have successfully managed it. It's crucial to have good time management skills and to prioritize tasks effectively.
  3. Programs and Opportunities:

    • Some banks, like Morgan Stanley (MS), do offer programs that might align with your school schedule. These programs can provide valuable experience and networking opportunities.
    • It's also worth exploring off-cycle internships, which can be more flexible and might fit better with your academic calendar.
  4. Networking and Experience:

    • Interning during the school year can help you build a network within the industry and gain practical experience that will make you a more competitive candidate for summer internships and full-time roles.
  5. Previous Experiences:

    • According to a thread, an incoming analyst at CS NY mentioned trying to get a fall off-cycle internship to stay busy and learn something new while their start date was deferred. This indicates that there are opportunities available and that they can be worthwhile.

In summary, pursuing an internship during the school year at Columbia can be a strategic move to enhance your resume and build connections in the IB industry. Just ensure you can manage the workload and make the most of the opportunities available in NYC.
