Finance or medicine, which is better and more AI safe?
So im in the first semester of a business target school in Switzerland and thinking about doing medicine. Both degrees are almost free here.
I cannot decide what to do, I already worked 3 years in wealth management during high school and my apprenticeship @ credit suisse. I didn’t like it a lot, it was „simple“ work.
I have interests for both topics, Business mainly for money/status or having a leading position and medicine because I find it very interesting and i research privately, like to work/talk with people. My mom is a MD and has her own residency.
Whats more AI safe? Giving my background I could go into banking or big pharma in switzerland again If I hate being a doctor, no?
Bump
AI is the least of anyone's concerns
1) Study medicine. Get into the field. Because you have this natural inclination towards business, you will find a way to sell a product or to be an executive in a healthcare business down the road.
2) You can top your healthcare education with an MBA, and you'll be the perfect fit to do something in finance related to this industry (investment research or direct investing in healthcare).
3) If not, capital is a commodity nowadays, so come up with a business idea and because of your background (healthcare) you can raise money to develop some healthcare product. Fearing AI? Good, it means that there may be opportunities to develop AI products oriented towards healthcare. You can be on the side that develops those products as a MD, not so sure about finance (too crowded, meanwhile less MDs have such a business-inclination).
Don't underestimate as well the intellectual rigor required to study medicine vs. business or finance, be it St. Gallen or whatever other university. I was a lawyer before getting into finance and the critical thinking among my business-educated peers is quite mediocre, except some outliers.
Thank you for your answer. Yes im in St. Gallen.
Im just „afraid“ I would have had an easy career in Switzerland considering Europes old population and even though the numbers are raising not many people have a higher degree here compared to Germany for example. I felt that in wealth management, will be completely different for IB etc.
I wouldn't necessarily choose a career based on the impact AI will have on it but to answer your question: I think Medicine’s definitely a safer career from AI than finance. It still leans super hard on human skills— like judgment, empathy, and making calls based on a bigger picture. AI can help with diagnosing things like reading scans or lab tests, but that’s just one part of being a doctor. Docs are still needed to explain results, tailor treatments, and work with patients on what’s best for them. AI might suggest treatments, but it’s doctors who make the call when something’s not working or when things get complicated. They’re the ones raising the bar and ensuring patients are actually cared for—not just processed. But AI is already impacting finance across several areas like with trading, analyzing markets, and even budgeting apps. A lot of finance jobs are becoming more about managing AI tools than doing the actual work. People will always need doctors to trust and work with, even if AI is in the background helping out.
Message me. Happy to help
Don't do medicine if you're not passionate about the underlying nature of the work
That being said, if you are, you should do medicine. If you have any sort of business sense, you can bridge the two. Your mom has her own residency, so you already have something interesting there
