First Year Summer Internship Choices

Just finished my first year at university here and I have two summer internship opportunities. The first is for a small sized local financial planning firm, where I would be involved in a more research based role, which I believe would be a nice link to my career goal of AM for future internships. The second is for a top mid-tier global accounting firm but in an audit intern position. I was wondering if anyone has any insights on what trajectory I should take if I wish to pursue a career in AM and whether accepting the offer in the bigger yet seemingly less correlated firm is worth it? Thanks again everyone for your time.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights to consider for your decision:

  1. Relevance to Career Goals:

    • Financial Planning Firm: This role is more aligned with your career goal in Asset Management (AM). The research-based experience will provide you with relevant skills and knowledge that can be directly applicable to future AM roles.
    • Accounting Firm (Audit): While this is a prestigious opportunity, the audit experience may not be as directly relevant to AM. However, it can still provide a strong foundation in financial analysis and understanding of financial statements, which are valuable skills in any finance-related career.
  2. Firm Size and Prestige:

    • Financial Planning Firm: Smaller firms often offer more hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of the business. This can be beneficial for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the field.
    • Accounting Firm (Audit): Working at a top mid-tier global firm can add significant prestige to your resume. It also provides networking opportunities and exposure to a wide range of industries and clients.
  3. Future Opportunities:

    • Financial Planning Firm: Directly relevant experience can make you a more attractive candidate for future internships and full-time roles in AM.
    • Accounting Firm (Audit): The brand name and experience at a reputable firm can open doors to various opportunities, including potential lateral moves into finance roles that are more aligned with AM.
  4. Personal Interest and Learning:

    • Consider which role excites you more and where you believe you will learn the most. Passion and interest in your work can significantly impact your performance and future career trajectory.

In summary, if your primary goal is to pursue a career in Asset Management, the internship at the financial planning firm may provide more directly relevant experience. However, the audit role at the accounting firm offers prestige and a strong foundation in financial skills that can also be valuable. Weigh the pros and cons based on your career aspirations and personal interests.
