Following up with a contact

This may sound pretty simple, but what is the best way to follow up with a contact once the initial contact has been made? I have a few years job experience and I have made a few contacts in the city where I would like to move. However, nothing has really come out of the few meetings except for some more contacts for me. This is good, but I'm not sure exactly how to follow up with the first few people I have met. I would like to be considered for future openings obviously but there have been none since my first contact. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

there are some variable involved, such as exatly what your conversations were about previously.

basically, though, you just find any excuse to shoot them an email every now and then - examples could include updating them on what you've been up to professionally, asking what they think about a recent news item relating to their field or their company, etc

doing the above keeps you on their mind in a good way

Well, I am trying to relocate cities and change my career focus somewhat. So that was the extent of my interaction. Asking how to break into said field, contacts in the area, any other advice, etc. Most of the meetings went really well. A few were a complete waste of time. I followed up with a quick e-mail after I got my L1 pass results at the end of July. I'm trying to keep them updated but not pester them as most are SVP or Principal level.
