Follwing up with Hiring Manager instead of HR?

I was recently flew out for an interview for a corporate development position. I thought for the most part the interview went pretty well and before I left the hiring manager wanted to know what my time line as to when I could start (I guess thats a good sign, but maybe they ask all candidates that).

I sent the usual thank you emails, even getting some replies (which was actually kind of surprising to me). Anyways, I reached out to the hiring manager and no response. It was a week ago today when I went to interview, so I'm thinking about emailing the actually hiring manager (director of Corp Dev) who I interviewed at the end of the week if I don't hear anything. I just wanted to double check that it was acceptable to go around HR like that.

I suppose at this point in me the pessimist in me says I didn't get it, but I like closure (especially since its a position I truly want).

Thanks in advance!
