Fully remote job options in Finance

We all know about the trend of tech workers' roles becoming fully remote, who are taking their Western salaries to live it up in sunnier, bougie enclaves of under developed countries. It got me thinking about what options there are for people in the finance industry to do the same.

Particularly post-pandemic, nearly all of the major financial centers have become grotesquely expensive to live in, not only the top ones like NYC and London but also regional cities in Europe like Zurich, Paris, even Dublin... I'm sure the story is similar enough for tier 2 cities in the States.

Because let's face it, the majority of your money beyond a certain point just gets swallowed by the government in taxes (particularly in UK/EU) and to service a bloated mortgage or eyewatering for a place you need to be near the job, making the marginal effort to climb the corporate ladder not nearly as worth it as decades past.

So, monkeys, is there any way for finance people to step out of the matrix and be employed fully remotely in this industry? The only ones I have personally come across were hardcore quant developer types. Would be interested to hear if anyone has come across other roles that that could do this.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the finance industry has traditionally been slower to adopt fully remote roles compared to the tech industry. However, the pandemic has certainly accelerated remote work opportunities across various sectors, including finance. Here are some insights into remote work options in finance:

  1. Quantitative Roles: As you've mentioned, quant developers and other quantitative roles are more likely to be remote-friendly. These positions often require deep technical skills and can be done independently, making them well-suited for remote work.

  2. Freelance and Consulting: Many finance professionals have turned to freelance or consulting work, which can often be done remotely. This includes areas like financial modeling, due diligence, and other project-based work.

  3. Fintech Companies: The rise of financial technology companies has created more remote opportunities. Fintechs often have a more modern approach to work and may offer fully remote positions in areas like analysis, product management, and compliance.

  4. Remote-Friendly Firms: Some boutique investment banks and financial firms have started to offer more flexible work arrangements, including the option to work remotely. This trend is growing as firms recognize the benefits of remote work in attracting and retaining talent.

  5. Research and Analysis: Roles that focus on research, data analysis, and market analysis can sometimes be performed remotely, as they require access to data and software rather than physical presence.

  6. WSO Finance Research Analyst Internship: The WSO offers a remote/flexible internship that can help build your CV and potentially lead to more remote work opportunities in the finance sector.

It's important to note that while remote work is becoming more common, it's still not the norm in many traditional finance roles, especially at the senior level where face-to-face interaction is often valued. Networking and staying informed about industry trends can help identify firms and roles that are more open to remote work.
