Gapping a semester for the next recruiting cycle (2026 Summer)

Sophomore at a target here looking to get into restructuring. Got into the process too late and all the banks I am targeting are filled (RX). Currently considering continuing to recruit for other roles for summer 2025 and if I land anything I will take it.(as an addition to my resume) However, I will still be applying for summer 2026 RX roles, with better preparation and experience. Is that a viable plan?? Would really appreciate any input.

Based on the most helpful WSO content and insights from previous threads, your plan to continue recruiting for other roles for Summer 2025 while aiming for restructuring (RX) roles in Summer 2026 seems like a strategic approach. Here's why this could work in your favor:

  1. Gaining Relevant Experience: Taking on a different role in Summer 2025 can provide you with valuable experience that could be beneficial when re-recruiting for RX roles. It shows initiative, a willingness to learn, and the ability to adapt, which are qualities highly regarded in the finance industry.

  2. Better Preparation: Using the additional time to better prepare for RX recruiting demonstrates a focused and strategic approach to your career. It allows you to tailor your resume, hone your interview skills, and deepen your understanding of the restructuring space, making you a more competitive candidate.

  3. Networking Opportunities: Engaging in another role within the finance sector opens up networking opportunities. Building relationships and gaining insights from professionals in the field can be invaluable, not only for learning but also for securing interviews and offers in the future.

  4. Flexibility and Adaptability: Showing that you're open to exploring different areas within finance before settling on your preferred niche can be seen as a strength. It illustrates your adaptability and eagerness to understand the broader financial landscape, which is crucial in roles that require a comprehensive understanding of markets and businesses, like in restructuring.

However, it's important to remain focused on your ultimate goal of breaking into restructuring. Keep networking with professionals in RX, stay updated on industry trends, and perhaps seek out projects or clubs that align with restructuring to further demonstrate your interest and commitment to this path.

Remember, the journey into high finance is often non-linear, and taking a strategic detour can sometimes be the best way to reach your destination. Keep leveraging the resources and community on WSO for advice and support as you navigate this process.
