Getting an Internship - Junior year

I'm in my junior year now and I'm in the process of trying to secure an internship in NYC for this summer (I live in the area). I keep checking my school's job board but there isn't much on there, minus a few internships in China. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can look for an internship? My semester starts back up next week and while I am going to hound my schools' career center I would like to have a fallback option in case that doesn't pan out.

Thanks in advance.

I would spend the majority of your time networking. This will not only help you get closer to landing an internship, but maybe a full time job later on down the road. LinkedIn is the way to go. I am a junior as well and go to a non-target but have already locked down internships at moderate/boutique size companies just through networking with alumni that I felt had something in common with myself and building a relationship with them. Applying through the career center is good, but knowing people at the firm you want to work at will get you a lot further.

Having a non-target school on your resume isnt a "death" sentence in terms of landing an internship/job. Landing an internship is an uphill battle no matter where you go since they are so competitive, especially in finance. As long as you've done well in school and have some relevant work experience, you have a shot. Just submitting your resume cold to a BB will not work, but if you are able to network successfully, you just might be able to get your foot in the door for an interview. This site has plenty of non-target success stories, but dont be discouraged if you dont even hear back from some of the BB's. Make sure you network and find some smaller companies as "backups" if you dont succeed with the BB's. Good luck!
