Getting Internships

Hi all,

I am a first year graduate business student at Washington University in St. Louis. I am at the perfect school if I wanted to be a brand manager at P&G, or work in a large corporation's finance department--but a difficult school to get yourself back into trading and Asset Management.

My goal would be to land a job in an asset management shop, or trading desk anywhere. I'd be happy working at a trading desk for a commodities firm, power company, etc.

My immediate problem is that I can't figure out how to get an internship. I was working my way up trying to move from Ops to the desk after undergrad, so I'm fine once I can get to the interview--but I am having problems getting interviews--or even finding firms who have internship programs at all.

Any suggestions?

I am sure you can find somewhere that will let you work for free during the week with some cold calling etc.

Right, the best way to get your foot in the door to any prospective job/internship is to show the firm you are indispensable. Offering to cold call or perform other lackluster task is a good way to show them you'll do whatever it takes.

You also shouldn't assume that a firm won't hire interns just because they don't list it on their site. Shoot them an email and ask. It can't hurt.
